Question: You should be able to find the radius, diameter, circumference, and the area of this circle. What is the area of the circle?
Dear Parent(s), I hear you loud and clear, and I have the answers!
Complaints About 5th Grade Math Curriculum
Increased Rigor Gap: The 5th-grade curriculum introduces "foundational algebraic concepts," volume, and fraction/decimal fluency. Parents complain that students who did not fully master 4th-grade basics are "lost" as the curriculum accelerates toward middle school preparation. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can do remedial 4th grade math to fill the gaps while teaching 5th grade math at the same time.
Heavy Testing Burden: CMS has added multiple layers of assessments, including I-ready diagnostics, MAP, and unit-specific mid- and summative assessments. Parents feel that "teaching to the test" consumes time that could be spent on deep conceptual understanding. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte teaches and tutors students to deeply understand and master the concepts to advance in math.
Lack of Physical Resources: Like 4th grade, the reliance on digital platforms (like the 2025-2026 "EnVision" or "Open Up" materials) remains a sticking point for parents who prefer physical textbooks to help their children study at home. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can get your student a physical textbook to read and study for the lowest possible cost.
Overcrowded Classrooms: In some elementary schools, 5th-grade math classes house between 26 and 34 students. Parents complain that teachers cannot provide the individual attention required for complex 5th-grade concepts like multi-digit division and fraction operations. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte cand do 1 on 1 tutoring and give your student all the time they need to learn the complexities of all levels of math.
Complaints About the CMS System for 5th Graders
Achievement Disparities: While CMS reported "historic" gains in 2025, overall math proficiency for grades 3-8 only recently climbed to approximately 56%. Parents of color, in particular, highlight that Black and Hispanic students continue to lag behind their white and Asian peers by significant margins. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte has a philosophy about math-there is no level of math. A fourth grader can learn any level of math if taught well.
Preparation for Middle School: There is a common complaint that the system does not adequately bridge the gap between elementary and middle school. Parents worry that 5th graders are not meeting the "College and Career Ready" (CCR) targets—which for 2025 was set at 37% but only reached 33%—leaving them unprepared for 6th-grade Honors math. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte understands the transition from 5th grade math to 6th grade math and we introduce the 5th graders to algebra early.

Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

Question: Do I need a desktop computer for my student?
Yes, your student must have access to the internet, speakers on their computer, and I recommend access to a working printer to printout academic work. I recommend a desktop computer over Ipads and other devices.
Do you do academic assessments of your students?
Yes, my students do continuous academic assessments in math and English grammar to determine the student’s skills in the subject being tutored. The continuous academic assessment allows us to adjust your student’s academic tutoring to fit their needs.
Question: Do you tutor ELA?
After a careful assessment of the student’s English grammar skills, the student is taught by the master tutor, Dr. Kevin L. Powell, using the Glencoe Language Arts English Grammar and Composition Handbook with complete assessment questions in each chapter based on the reading level of the student. In addition, the student will begin studying and incorporating 5,014 SAT vocabulary words for reading comprehension. The student is continuously tested to measure their academic progress. The student is taught English composition (writing and structure).

In 2026, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) 5th Grade math curriculum is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS). The district primarily uses Illustrative Mathematics and EnVision Mathematics to deliver a curriculum focused on preparing students for middle school through three critical areas: fraction operations, decimal fluency, and volume.
Core Content Standards
The curriculum is divided into several major domains:
Number and Operations (Base Ten): Students master the place value system up to the thousandths place. They develop fluency with multi-digit whole number multiplication and division (extending to 2-digit divisors) and perform all four operations with decimals to the hundredths.
Number and Operations (Fractions): This is a primary focus of 5th grade. Students learn to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and apply their understanding to multiply and divide fractions (specifically unit fractions by whole numbers and vice versa).
Measurement and Data: Students learn to convert units within a given measurement system (e.g., centimeters to meters). They also study geometric measurement, specifically developing an understanding of volume as an attribute of solid figures and relating it to multiplication and addition.
Geometry: Students classify two-dimensional figures based on their properties and learn to graph points on a coordinate plane to solve real-world problems.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Students write and interpret numerical expressions using parentheses, brackets, or braces and analyze mathematical patterns and relationships.
Curriculum Resources & Methodology
Primary Resources: CMS uses Illustrative Mathematics, which emphasizes concrete manipulatives and problem-solving to build conceptual understanding. Some schools also utilize EnVision Mathematics to follow a structured pacing guide that integrates digital and physical practice.
Instructional Style: Rather than just memorizing procedures, students are expected to "make sense of problems" and "construct viable arguments," explaining the how and why behind their math.
Digital Tools: Platforms like IXL are used to track student progress against specific North Carolina standards, providing targeted practice for skills like adding decimals to thousandths or converting customary units.
Typical Pacing (2025–2026 Academic Year)
The curriculum generally follows this sequence:
Quarter 1: Multi-digit multiplication and division; decimal place value and operations.
Quarter 2: Continued work with decimals and the start of fraction addition/subtraction.
Quarter 3: Fraction multiplication/division; measurement conversions and data representation.
Quarter 4: Volume, geometry, coordinate planes, and End-of-Grade (EOG) test preparation.
