About Dr. Kevin L. Powell!

I wrote about myself. vs. AI writing about me.

“I am sometimes wondering about the gift of knowledge, and what man has created?”

Meet Your Master Tutor: Dr. Kevin L. Powell

Turning Students into Scholars through Logic, Expertise, and Empathy

Hello! I am Dr. Kevin L. Powell, and I am on a mission to solve the puzzle of your child’s learning needs.

I am a mathematician by trade, a theoretical physicist and logician by training, and a writer at heart. My journey in education began in Detroit, Michigan, where I studied at Wayne County Community College and Wayne State University before continuing my research at the University of Michigan.

But I didn't stop there. To truly understand how education should work for every type of mind, I’ve lived and studied across the globe—from Charlotte and Ottawa to Accra, Kingston, and my current home in Santo Domingo. This international perspective allows me to connect with students from all walks of life, helping them navigate the transition from student to scholar.

The "Master Tutor" Difference

In 2026, academic success requires more than just memorizing facts. As a Master Tutor, I bring a rare level of academic rigor to every session:

  • Elite Credentials: I hold a Doctorate in Mathematics, along with Master’s degrees in Physics, Economics, and Business.

  • Specialized Support: I am an expert in helping students with ADHD and ADD thrive by teaching them how to learn through metacognition and time management.

  • Comprehensive Subject Mastery: From 3rd-grade reading to advanced SAT/ACT prep, High School Science, and English Composition, I provide high-quality, low-cost instruction for grades 3–12.

Beyond the Classroom

I believe a great tutor should be a relatable mentor. When I’m not helping students master calculus or perfect their essays, you’ll find me writing novels, engaging in political commentary, or sharing a laugh as a part-time comedian.

I am an avid fan of Major League Baseball (I’ll always cheer for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, though I’ll always have a complaint ready for the Yankees!), a chess and billiards player, a lover of BMWs, and a passionate cook.

Let’s Work Together

I don’t just teach subjects; I collaborate with parents and students to build self-motivation and critical thinking. Whether your student needs to catch up or wants to get ahead, I am here to provide the expert guidance they deserve.

Meet Your Master Tutor: Dr. Kevin L. Powell

Empowering Students to Become Scholars through Expertise, Logic, and Empathy

“Hello, my name is Dr. Kevin L. Powell. I am a mathematician mostly, a part-time comedian always, a theoretical physicist, logician, writer, and political commentator. More than anything, I want to be the catalyst for your student’s academic breakthrough.”

A Global Perspective on Learning

Born in Detroit, Michigan, my academic journey began at Wayne County Community College and Wayne State University, followed by advanced studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. My quest to understand how education truly works has taken me across the globe. I have lived, studied, and researched in Charlotte, North Carolina; Accra, Ghana; Ottawa, Canada; and Kingston, Jamaica.

Today, I reside in Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic, where I continue to serve students with a broad, international conception of what it means to be a scholar.

What is a "Master Tutor"?

At Tutor Charlotte, we provide low-cost, high-quality after-school and weekend services that go far beyond standard tutoring. I hold myself to the rigorous standards of a Master Tutor, a title that requires:

  • A Doctorate in Mathematics.

  • A Master’s degree in a core discipline (mine are in Physics and Economics).

  • Two years of formal study in logic, analytical reasoning, and critical thinking.

  • A lifelong commitment to studying four hours every single day.

In addition to my Doctorate and Master's degrees, I hold an AAS in Accounting and a BBA in Accounting and Management. This diverse background allows me to bridge the gap between complex science and practical business logic.

Expert Support for ADHD and Learning Differences

I specialize in supporting students with ADHD, ADD, and other learning challenges. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" model. As an astute observer and empathetic collaborator, I work with parents and students to solve the unique "puzzle" of their learning needs.

I focus on the ancillary skills that are vital for success in 2026 and beyond:

  • Metacognition: Teaching students to understand and control their own thought processes.

  • Time Management & Self-Motivation: Building the discipline required for independent study.

  • The Transition to Scholar: Moving students from passive learning to active research and analysis.

Comprehensive Subject Mastery (Grades 3–12)

Whether your student is preparing for the SAT/ACT or needs help with foundational subjects, I provide expert instruction in:

  • Mathematics: All levels, from elementary to advanced calculus.

  • English: Grammar, composition, and deep reading comprehension.

  • Science & History: High school level curriculum and standardized test prep.

Beyond the Books

I believe a well-rounded tutor inspires a well-rounded student. When I’m not teaching, I’m likely writing novels, playing a game of chess or billiards, or working on BMW automobiles. I am an avid fan of Major League Baseball (I’ll always root for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, though I’ll always find a reason to complain about the Yankees!). I also love cooking, music, and foreign travel.
