Complaints About 8th Grade Math Curriculum
Math Track "Gatekeeping": One of the most significant grievances in 2025–2026 involves the district's strict control over honors placement. Parents of advanced students are fighting policies that prevent 8th graders from taking high-school level courses (Math 1 or Math 2) based on single data points, arguing this limits their future college competitiveness. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte believes students should be taught math at their learning pace, and if the 8th grade student wants to learn Math I, Math II, Math III, Precalculus, and Calculus, he will teach them.
Curriculum Complexity and Inequity: Board members and parents have noted that while the district aims for "equity," the result is often the removal of advanced math offerings (like Math 3) from neighborhood middle schools, forcing students to commute to specific gifted magnets to stay on an accelerated track. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte believes any student can be taught any level of math starting in 4th grade.
The "Textbook Gap": Parents express extreme frustration with the lack of physical textbooks. They find it difficult to assist with 8th-grade homework when the material is scattered across digital links, PDFs, and YouTube videos, which they feel lack the structure of a standard reference book. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can help the parent get a physical textbook for their student to read and study daily.
Complaints About the CMS System for 8th Graders
"College and Career Ready" Failure: Despite modest gains, parents are alarmed that a large percentage of 8th graders are not scoring at the highest levels (4 or 5) on state assessments. As of late 2025, only about 30–33% of students were meeting these "college-ready" targets. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte start preparation for the North Carolina Math EOG’s every November, and do continuous assessments daily to adjust tutoring to ensure your student deeply learns the concept.
Administrative Lack of Transparency: Families report a "bureaucratic" experience when trying to challenge math placements or report teacher issues, often feeling that administrators and district leaders are unresponsive to parental choice. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte is always available to talk to a parent about their student.

Compare our Tutor Charlotte flat price $170.00 a month for 28 to 30 hours of tutoring to our competitor Huntington Learning Center. Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

Tutor Charlotte follows this math curriculum for tutoring 8th grade students in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In 2026, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) 8th Grade math curriculum is governed by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS). The curriculum primarily utilizes Illustrative Mathematics (delivered through Open Up Resources) to foster conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
Core Standards and Focus Areas
The 8th-grade curriculum is designed to prepare students for high school algebra and geometry through several key domains:
Expressions and Equations: Students work with radicals and integer exponents. They analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations (systems), exploring their connections to proportional relationships and lines.
Functions: This year introduces the formal definition of a function as a rule assigning exactly one output to each input. Students evaluate and compare functions represented in different ways (algebraically, graphically, numerically, or verbally).
The Number System: Students learn to identify irrational numbers and use rational approximations to estimate their size and locate them on a number line.
Geometry: The focus is on understanding congruence and similarity through physical models or software. Students also apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances and solve problems involving the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.
Statistics and Probability: Students investigate patterns of association in bivariate data (data involving two variables) using scatter plots and two-way tables.
Advanced and High School Level Courses
CMS offers high-school level mathematics for eligible 8th graders to accelerate their progression:
NC Math 1 (Honors): This course fulfills a high school graduation requirement and deepens understanding of linear, quadratic, and exponential relationships.
Honors Track: Available at each middle school, these courses integrate next-grade-level standards to ensure students are prepared for advanced high school sequences.
Instructional Pacing (Typical 2025–2026 Sequence)
Quarter 1: Real numbers (radicals/exponents) and linear equations.
Quarter 2: Systems of linear equations and introduction to functions.
Quarter 3: Bivariate data analysis and geometry concepts (congruence/similarity).
Quarter 4: The Pythagorean Theorem and 3D volume.
