Complaints About 6th Grade Math Curriculum
Limitation of Advanced Options: One of the most significant complaints in 2026 follows a CMS policy change that limits 6th graders' ability to take Algebra 1 (Math 1). Previously, high-performing students could test into this course two years early, but the district now limits this primarily to the gifted "Horizons" program at specific schools. Parents argue this reduces options for students who excel in math and was not announced transparently. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte will teach high performing students all levels of mathematics and create a pathway to advocate for your student to get into higher level math classes.
Lack of Physical Textbooks: There is ongoing frustration regarding the absence of physical math textbooks for 6th graders. Parents find it difficult to support their children's learning when the curriculum is delivered through dozens of "random links and PDFs" on Chromebooks rather than a single source of reference material. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can help you get physical textbooks for your student to ready and study daily.
Rigorous Standardized Content: The transition to middle school math involves abstract concepts like variables, inequalities, and coordinate planes. Some parents report their children—even former honor roll students—struggle to pass because the curriculum moves too quickly or uses confusing "new math" methods. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte understand the complexities of student’s transition to algebra, and addresses the issues successfully every time.
Complaints About the CMS System for 5th Graders
Achievement Gaps and Readiness: Unofficial state testing data for 2025–2026 indicates that fewer than 10% of high school students were "college-and-career ready" in math, a trend board members trace back to foundational struggles starting in middle school grades like 6th. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte understands that 6th grade math is usually and always where the learning issues start when tutoring high school math. Therefore, we re-build the 6th grade foundation missing in many students.

Compare our Tutor Charlotte flat price $170.00 a month for 28 to 30 hours of tutoring to our competitor Huntington Learning Center. Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

Question: Do I need a desktop computer for my student?
Yes, your student must have access to the internet, speakers on their computer, and I recommend access to a working printer to printout academic work. I recommend a desktop computer over Ipads and other devices.

In 2026, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) 6th Grade math curriculum is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS). The district primarily utilizes the Illustrative Mathematics (IM) curriculum, which is delivered through a problem-based learning model designed to build conceptual understanding.
Core Standards and Focus Areas
The 6th-grade year serves as a critical transition from elementary to middle school math, focusing on four primary domains:
Ratios and Proportional Relationships: Students move from additive to multiplicative reasoning to solve real-world problems. They explore ratios, unit rates, and percentages (e.g., finding a percent of a quantity as a ratio per 100).
The Number System: This area focuses on fluency with multi-digit division and operations with multi-digit decimals. Students also extend their understanding of numbers to include rational numbers (integers and negative numbers) on a coordinate plane.
Expressions and Equations: Students begin their work with variables, writing and evaluating numerical expressions with exponents and solving one-variable equations and inequalities.
Geometry and Statistics: In geometry, students find the area of right triangles and polygons and the surface area of prisms using nets. In statistics, they learn to describe and summarize data sets using measures of center (mean/median) and variability.
Instructional Pacing (2025–2026)
The CMS curriculum typically follows a structured sequence:
Quarter 1: Area and Surface Area; Introducing Ratios.
Quarter 2: Unit Rates and Percentages; Division of Fractions.
Quarter 3: Proportional Relationships; Operations with Rational Numbers.
Quarter 4: Expressions, Equations, and Statistics/Data Analysis.
Advanced Options (Honors Level)
CMS offers Honors-level courses for 6th graders. These courses are accelerated, incorporating several 7th-grade standards to prepare students for high school-level math (like Math 1/Algebra 1) while still in middle school.
Mathematical Practices
Beyond topical content, students are evaluated on eight Standards for Mathematical Practice, emphasizing critical thinking skills such as constructing viable arguments, modeling with mathematics, and persevering through complex problems.
