Complaints About 7th Grade Math Teachers

  • Instructional Quality for Advanced Learners: Parents of high-achieving 7th graders frequently complain about a perceived lack of rigor. In late 2025, CMS board members noted concerns that some students are "lost" in deep conceptual math or are being taught by teachers who rely too heavily on group-based "discovery" methods rather than direct instruction.

  • Class Size and Management: Seventh grade is often cited as a peak year for behavioral disruptions. Parents report that large class sizes (sometimes exceeding 30–35 students) make it difficult for teachers to provide the individual support needed for abstract concepts like rational number operations and linear equations.

  • Stability and Vacancies: Staffing challenges remain a top concern. Many 7th-grade math classrooms are led by long-term substitutes or teachers on "alternative license pathways" due to ongoing vacancies in the 2025–2026 school year.

Complaints About 7th Grade Math Curriculum

  • Controversial Math Tracks: A major point of contention in 2026 is the district’s move to limit high school-level math (Math 1) for younger students. Parents argue that preventing advanced 7th graders from moving into Math 1 or Math 2 creates "bottlenecks" that limit their college competitiveness.

  • Common Core Confusion: Parents continue to express frustration with the "Illustrative Mathematics" or "EnVision" materials, noting that the methods used for teaching ratios and proportional relationships are counterintuitive to how they learned math, making it nearly impossible to help with homework.

  • Digital Reliance over Textbooks: There is a persistent grievance regarding the lack of physical textbooks. Parents criticize the reliance on "links and PDFs" on Chromebooks, which they feel contributes to screen fatigue and makes it harder for students to reference previous lessons.

  • Complaints About the CMS System for 7th Graders

  • New Software Hurdles: The 2025–2026 rollout of Infinite Campus (replacing PowerSchool) has been a source of frustration for parents who report difficulty tracking their student's real-time math grades and missing assignments during the transition.

  • Inequity in Resources: Parents in high-poverty zones complain that their 7th graders are consistently assigned beginner teachers, while schools in wealthier "South County" zones retain veteran staff. This is cited as a primary driver of the district's persistent math achievement gap.

Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

In 2026, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) 7th Grade math curriculum is centered on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS). The district primarily uses Illustrative Mathematics (delivered via Open Up Resources) to emphasize conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.

Core Content Standards

The 7th-grade curriculum focuses on four critical areas to transition students toward algebra:

  • Ratios and Proportional Relationships: Students analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world problems involving percentages, simple interest, tax, tips, and scale drawings.

  • The Number System: A major focus is extending operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to all rational numbers, including negative integers, fractions, and decimals.

  • Expressions and Equations: Students use the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions and solve multi-step, real-life problems using numerical and algebraic equations and inequalities.

  • Geometry, Statistics, and Probability:

    • Geometry: Solving problems involving the area and circumference of a circle and the surface area and volume of two- and three-dimensional objects.

    • Statistics and Probability: Drawing informal comparative inferences about two populations and investigating chance processes through probability models.

Instructional Resources & Methodology

  • Problem-Based Learning: CMS utilizes Illustrative Mathematics, where students "learn by doing" through guided discussion and real-world problem-solving.

  • Honors Track: CMS offers Honors-level courses that incorporate 8th-grade standards to prepare students for high school-level Math 1 (Algebra 1) while still in middle school.

  • Digital Integration: Lessons are supported by online platforms like Khan Academy and IXL, providing video lessons and practice aligned specifically with the district's pacing.

Quarterly Pacing (2025–2026)

The district typically follows this instructional sequence:

  • Quarter 1: Scale Drawings; Introducing Proportional Relationships.

  • Quarter 2: Measuring Circles; Proportional Relationships and Percentages.

  • Quarter 3: Rational Number Arithmetic; Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities.

  • Quarter 4: Angles, Triangles, and Prisms; Probability and Sampling.
