Question: You should be able to find the radius, diameter, circumference, and the area of this circle. What is the circumference of the circle? Write the equation of a line passing through the points (0, -6) and (8, 0).
Dear Parent(s), I hear you loud and clear, and I have the answers!
Frustrations with the Math Curriculum
A significant source of conflict remains the district's use of "inquiry-based" curricula (such as MVP Math), which shifted from traditional direct instruction to a "productive struggle" model.
Homework Inaccessibility: Parents frequently complain that their 7th graders come home unable to complete homework because they were never "taught" the concept in class, leading to high frustration during the evening.
Declining Grades: High-achieving students have seen their grades drop significantly (e.g., from A’s to D’s or F's), causing severe self-doubt and emotional distress.
Private Tutoring Burden: Parents are angry that they must pay for private tutors or spend hours teaching the material themselves to prevent their children from failing, effectively subsidizing the public school system.
Grading and Academic Transparency
The methods used to evaluate student progress in 7th-grade math have led to accusations of "masking" failure.
Heavy Grading Curves: Parents have alleged that schools use heavy curves to artificially boost test scores, making it difficult for parents to see that their child has not actually mastered the 2026 state math standards.
Lack of Special Education (EC) Support: Parents of students with IEPs frequently file complaints when required special education services are not provided due to staff vacancies, significantly impacting the performance of students in 7th-grade math.

Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! Tutor Charlotte follows this math curriculum for tutoring 7th grade students in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 2026, the 7th-grade math curriculum in Raleigh’s Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, primarily delivered through the Open Up Resources/Illustrative Mathematics (IM) curriculum.
While the state is currently in the process of finalizing new 2026 K-12 Math Standards—with the first draft released in late 2025—full implementation of revised standards is not scheduled until the 2028-2029 school year.
Core Curriculum Units (Open Up/IM)
The 2026 curriculum is organized into nine sequential units designed to build conceptual understanding and fluency:
Scale Drawings: Understanding scale factors, actual lengths, and areas.
Introducing Proportional Relationships: Using tables, graphs, and equations to represent proportions.
Measuring Circles: Exploring the relationship between radius, diameter, circumference, and area.
Proportional Relationships and Percentages: Applying proportional reasoning to real-world percent problems like tax, tips, and discounts.
Rational Number Arithmetic: Developing fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing all rational numbers (including negative numbers).
Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities: Solving multi-step problems and interpreting variables in context.
Angles, Triangles, and Prisms: Calculating surface area, volume, and understanding geometric constructions.
Probability and Sampling: Investigating chance and making inferences about populations.
Putting It All Together: A final unit integrating all course concepts.
Course Pathways in WCPSS
Students in Raleigh typically enter one of two math tracks in 7th grade:
Math 7: Standard grade-level curriculum focused on the units above.
Math 7 Plus: An accelerated track that compresses three years of material into two. It covers all 7th-grade standards plus a significant portion of 8th-grade material, such as radicals, integer exponents, and linear equations, to prepare students for NC Math 1 in 8th grade.
