Questions: Can you write an equation of a line parallel to the graph with a positive slope that passes through (2, 0)?

-10 10 10 -10 0 Intersection y = 3x - 3 y = -2x + 4

Dear Parent(s), I hear you loud and clear, and I have the answers!

Inconsistent "NC Math 1" Instruction

A primary source of frustration for 8th-grade parents is the delivery of NC Math 1, a high school-level course taken by advanced middle schoolers.

  • Gap in Fundamentals: Parents complain that students are pushed into Math 1 based on test scores without having fully mastered 8th-grade foundational material. This forces teachers to choose between slowing down or leaving students behind. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte will do a deep diagnostic of your student’s math knowledge and abilities with daily and continuous assessments and re-teach and test your student in all levels of math.

  • Grading Disparity: High-achieving students who typically earned A's in 7th grade frequently see their grades drop to C's or D's in 8th-grade Math 1. Parents argue these "mechanically correct" students lack a conceptual understanding of the high school content. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte teaches deep conceptual understanding of math from 4th grade to Calculus.

  • Curriculum Conflict (MVP Math): The district uses the Mathematics Vision Project (MVP) for Math 1. Parents continue to protest this "discovery-based" model, claiming teachers act only as "facilitators" rather than instructors, leaving children unable to do homework without expensive private tutors. But Dr. Kevin actually teaches mathematics to your student with countless explanations of examples applied to real-world problems.

High-Stakes Testing Stress

  • EOC and EOG Pressure: 8th grade is a high-pressure year involving both the Grade 8 Math EOG and the NC Math 1 End-of-Course (EOC) test. Parents complain that the 2026 testing standards have led to a "teaching to the test" environment that prioritizes rote memorization over actual problem-solving skills. But Dr. Kevin teaches math to a student starting at the beginning (no understanding) to the end complete in-depth understanding (Real world applications and 1,000’s of practice math word problems).

  • Inequitable Outcomes: There is growing vocal concern that the current instruction methods result in more attention being paid to "borderline" passing students while the lowest and highest performing students are neglected. But Dr. Kevin teaches each of his students at their own pace individually during the many 1 on 1 tutoring sessions the student gets each month.

I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

Tutor Charlotte follows this math curriculum for tutoring 8th grade students in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, the 8th-grade math curriculum for the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS). For the 2025–2026 school year, the district utilizes the Open Up Resources 6–8 Math curriculum, which focuses on active, collaborative learning and real-world problem-solving.

Core Content Domains (Math 8)

The curriculum is organized into five major domains:

  • The Number System: Students learn to distinguish between rational and irrational numbers and approximate irrational values (such as square roots) on a number line.

  • Expressions and Equations: Topics include radicals and integer exponents, scientific notation, and solving linear equations and inequalities. A major focus is analyzing and solving systems of two linear equations.

  • Functions: Students define, evaluate, and compare functions. They use functions to model relationships between quantities, focusing on rate of change (slope) and initial value (y-intercept).

  • Geometry: Key concepts include understanding congruence and similarity through transformations, analyzing angle relationships (parallel lines and transversals), applying the Pythagorean Theorem, and calculating the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

  • Statistics and Probability: Students investigate patterns of association in bivariate data using scatter plots and two-way tables.

Advanced Math Pathways

Eligible 8th-grade students in Raleigh may also take high school credit courses:

  • NC Math 1: A compacted course that covers 8th-grade standards along with all high school Math 1 standards, focusing on linear, exponential, and quadratic relationships.

  • NC Math 2: An advanced course for students who completed Math 1 in 7th grade, focusing on quadratic functions, advanced geometry (similarity and right triangle trigonometry), and probability.

Standards for Mathematical Practice

In addition to content, students are expected to develop eight "habits of mind," including making sense of problems, reasoning abstractly, constructing viable arguments, and modeling with mathematics.
