In New York State, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 are officially known as Regents Examinations in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, respectively, and passing these exams with a score of 65 or higher is required for a standard Regents Diploma, with three passes needed for an Advanced Regents Diploma, aligning with the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards.

  • Algebra I Regents: The foundational high school math exam, covering linear equations, functions, and more.

  • Geometry Regents: Focuses on geometric concepts, proofs, and problem-solving.

  • Algebra II Regents: The third course in the sequence, building on Algebra I with more complex functions and advanced topics, often including Trigonometry.

  • Regents Diploma: Requires passing at least one math Regents exam (Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II).

  • Advanced Regents Diploma: Requires passing all three Regents exams (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II).

Parent Complaints about Buffalo Public High Schools

In January 2026, parents in Buffalo and across New York continue to voice significant concerns regarding high school math education. Recent reports and community feedback highlight several specific complaints:

Specific Parent Complaints in Buffalo

  • Disconnect Between Grades and Mastery: Parents report being told their children are performing at "grade level" by schools, only to discover through assessment scores that they lack actual proficiency.

  • Loss of "Real-World" Skills: There is frustration that students lack everyday math skills, such as mental math and basic financial literacy (e.g., making change), due to a focus on complex standardized curriculum over "back-to-basics" instruction.

  • "Facilitated" vs. Direct Instruction: Many parents struggle with the modern "facilitated" teaching style (often associated with Common Core or newer standardized programs), finding it difficult to assist their children with homework that uses methods unfamiliar to them.

  • High Math Anxiety: Parents have observed increased anxiety and a lack of confidence in their children, leading to some students feeling like "failures" due to the difficulty of the current curriculum.

  • Need for Supplemental Support: Approximately 43% of parents express concern about their child's math progress, with many feeling forced to seek outside tutoring because school instruction alone is insufficient.
