Compare our Tutor Charlotte flat price $170.00 a month for 28 to 30 hours of tutoring to our competitor Huntington Learning Center. Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

What a master tutor will do as your student’s tutor?

  • Be a private teacher to your student and give them one on one attention to their learning needs in Math III.

  • Core Academic Focus

The curriculum expands into complex algebraic and trigonometric concepts, roughly equivalent to a comprehensive Algebra II course with integrated geometry and statistics.

    • Advanced Functions & Algebra: Students study new function families, including polynomial, rational, radical, absolute value, and logarithmic functions. Key skills include using the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra and understanding inverse functions.

    • Trigonometry: The course introduces the unit circle, radian measure, and trigonometric identities. Students extend trigonometric ratios to functions of angle measures.

    • Geometry: Lessons focus on the properties of circles and conics. This includes understanding arc length, sector area, and applying geometric concepts in modeling and optimization situations.

    • Statistics: Students learn about statistical inference, the normal distribution, and evaluating the validity of random processes in experiments and surveys.

Question: What is a typical Tutor Charlotte tutoring session like?

During the tutoring session, we ask the student the following questions and tutor what the student needs:

1. Do you have any homework that I can help you with today?

2. Do you have a quiz, test, or exam this week I can help you prepare for?

3. Do you need a lesson on a particular concept your teacher taught that you did not understand?

4. What did your Language Arts teacher, math teacher, and or science teacher teach you today?

Question: Do I need a desktop computer for my student?

Yes, your student must have access to the internet, speakers on their computer, and I recommend access to a working printer to printout academic work. I recommend a desktop computer over Ipads and other devices.

Do you do academic assessments of your students?

Yes, my students do continuous academic assessments in math and English grammar to determine the student’s skills in the subject being tutored. The continuous academic assessment allows us to adjust your student’s academic tutoring to fit their needs.

Question: Do you tutor ELA?

After a careful assessment of the student’s English grammar skills, the student is taught by the master tutor, Dr. Kevin L. Powell, using the Glencoe Language Arts English Grammar and Composition Handbook with complete assessment questions in each chapter based on the reading level of the student. In addition, the student will begin studying and incorporating 5,014 SAT vocabulary words for reading comprehension. The student is continuously tested to measure their academic progress. The student is taught English composition (writing and structure).

  • 9th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

  • 10th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

  • 11th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

  • 12th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

Dr. Kevin L. Powell tutors and teaches mathematics strictly from the textbooks.

In 2026, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) NC Math 3 curriculum is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS). It builds upon concepts from Math 1 and Math 2, focusing on advanced algebraic reasoning, functions, and geometric modeling to prepare students for college-level mathematics.

Core Content Domains

The curriculum is organized into conceptual categories that prioritize mathematical modeling and real-world application:

  • Algebra: Students work with the complex number system and master arithmetic with polynomial and rational expressions. This includes creating and solving equations that represent absolute value, polynomial, exponential, and rational relationships.

  • Functions: A major focus is placed on inverse functions, trigonometric functions (including the unit circle), and logarithmic expressions. Students evaluate piecewise-defined functions and use function notation to interpret context.

  • Geometry: Students explore the geometric properties of conics and circles. They apply concepts of density based on area and volume to solve design and optimization problems.

  • Statistics and Probability: The curriculum emphasizes making inferences about populations based on random samples and using simulations to estimate margins of error.

Instructional Resources & Methodology

  • Open-Source Curriculum: CMS uses a standards-aligned, open-source high school math curriculum developed in collaboration with Coherent Math.

  • Culturally Relevant Instruction: The curriculum is designed to be equitable and culturally relevant, often incorporating social justice themes and fostering a collaborative learning environment.

  • Technology-Enhanced Assessment: The NC Math 3 End-of-Course (EOC) test is calculator active for all items.

Key Units of Study (2025–2026)

The typical instructional sequence includes specific units such as:

  1. Functions and Their Inverses

  2. Polynomial Functions (including modeling and volume calculations)

  3. Rational Functions (operations with rational expressions and equations)

  4. Exponentials and Logarithms (applications in real-life contexts)

2026 Graduation Policy Shifts

Starting with the 2025–2026 school year, a significant legislative change (House Bill 415) removed the strict requirement for NC Math 3 as one of the four mandatory mathematics courses for graduation. Students entering the 9th grade in 2026-2027 may instead complete NC Math 1, NC Math 2, a Computer Science course, and a fourth math course aligned with their career plan. However, CMS continues to encourage college-bound students to complete NC Math 3 to remain competitive for higher education admissions.

  1. Is there a tutoring contract I have to sign? There is no contract. There is no obligation to continue. You pay month to month only. You can stop academic tutoring anytime.

  2. How do you assess a student's current level? We do continuous assessments daily to determine the student’s skill level and gaps in knowledge, and we adjust each individual tutoring session to meet the students needs to get the academic results you want.

  3. What kind of measurable results can I expect? One month of academic tutoring under the direction of Dr. Kevin L. Powell will result in a complete positive direction in your student’s math grades. For English Grammar, it will take approximately 90 days to see positive results because many students are several grade levels below the standards for reading comprehension and 6th Grade English Grammar.

  4. How do you handle a student who "isn't getting it"? Your student will get extra 1 on 1 sessions and we make adjustments to our tutoring sessions. In addition, if permitted, we contact your student’s teacher’s to ensure a connection between the tutoring session and current needs in the classroom.
