Dear Parent(s), I hear you loud and clear about your students attending public schools, and I am here to help!

Complaints about the 6th Grade Math Curriculum in North Carolina Public Schools:

  • Limitation of Advanced Options: One of the most significant complaints in 2026 follows a CMS policy change that limits 6th graders' ability to take Algebra 1 (Math 1). Previously, high-performing students could test into this course two years early, but the district now limits this primarily to the gifted "Horizons" program at specific schools. Parents argue this reduces options for students who excel in math and was not announced transparently. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte will teach high performing students in North Carolina all levels of mathematics and create a pathway to advocate for your student to get into higher level math classes.

  • Lack of Physical Textbooks: There is ongoing frustration regarding the absence of physical math textbooks for 6th graders. Parents find it difficult to support their children's learning when the curriculum is delivered through dozens of "random links and PDFs" on Chromebooks rather than a single source of reference material. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can help you get physical textbooks for your student to ready and study daily.

  • Rigorous Standardized Content: The transition to middle school math involves abstract concepts like variables, inequalities, and coordinate planes. Some parents report their children—even former honor roll students—struggle to pass because the curriculum moves too quickly or uses confusing "new math" methods. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte understand the complexities of student’s transition to algebra, and addresses the issues successfully every time.

Complaints About the Education of 6th Graders in Public Schools.

  • Achievement Gaps and Readiness: Unofficial state testing data for 2025–2026 indicates that fewer than 10% of high school students were "college-and-career ready" in math, a trend board members trace back to foundational struggles starting in middle school grades like 6th. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte understands that 6th grade math is usually and always where the learning issues start when tutoring high school math. Therefore, we re-build the 6th grade foundation missing in many students

  1. Is there a tutoring contract I have to sign? There is no contract. There is no obligation to continue. You pay month to month only. You can stop academic tutoring anytime.

  2. How do you assess a student's current level? We do continuous assessments daily to determine the student’s skill level and gaps in knowledge, and we adjust each individual tutoring session to meet the students needs to get the academic results you want.

  3. What kind of measurable results can I expect? One month of academic tutoring under the direction of Dr. Kevin L. Powell will result in a complete positive direction in your student’s math grades. For English Grammar, it will take approximately 90 days to see positive results because many students are several grade levels below the standards for reading comprehension and 6th Grade English Grammar.

  4. How do you handle a student who "isn't getting it"? Your student will get extra 1 on 1 sessions and we make adjustments to our tutoring sessions. In addition, if permitted, we contact your student’s teacher’s to ensure a connection between the tutoring session and current needs in the classroom.
