Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

Will the master tutor, Dr. Kevin L. Powell, contact my student’s teachers?

Yes, if given permission by a parent. I like to work closely with the student’s teacher in order to get the best result for your student. Click “Academic Permission Form” and print it out. Complete the form and give it to each teacher who should be contacted by the tutor.

Question: What is a typical Tutor Charlotte tutoring session like?

During the tutoring session, we ask the student the following questions and tutor what the student needs:

1. Do you have any homework that I can help you with today?

2. Do you have a quiz, test, or exam this week I can help you prepare for?

3. Do you need a lesson on a particular concept your teacher taught that you did not understand?

4. What did your Language Arts teacher, math teacher, and or science teacher teach you today?

Question: Do I need a desktop computer for my student?

Yes, your student must have access to the internet, speakers on their computer, and I recommend access to a working printer to printout academic work. I recommend a desktop computer over Ipads and other devices.

Do you do academic assessments of your students?

Yes, my students do continuous academic assessments in math and English grammar to determine the student’s skills in the subject being tutored. The continuous academic assessment allows us to adjust your student’s academic tutoring to fit their needs.

Question: Do you tutor ELA?

After a careful assessment of the student’s English grammar skills, the student is taught by the master tutor, Dr. Kevin L. Powell, using the Glencoe Language Arts English Grammar and Composition Handbook with complete assessment questions in each chapter based on the reading level of the student. In addition, the student will begin studying and incorporating 5,014 SAT vocabulary words for reading comprehension. The student is continuously tested to measure their academic progress. The student is taught English composition (writing and structure).

  • 9th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

  • 10th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

  • 11th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

  • 12th Grade English Grammar and Composition Handbook

Dr. Kevin L. Powell tutors and teaches mathematics, English Grammar, history, and science strictly from the textbooks.

Dear Parent(s), I hear you loud and clear about your students attending public schools, and I am here to help!

In 2026, parent complaints regarding the math department at East Mecklenburg High School ("East Meck") center on the school’s implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, the reliance on digital "facilitated" learning, and staffing inconsistencies.

The IB Math Gap

As an IB World School, East Meck offers high-level math tracks, but parents often cite a disconnect between standard math and IB requirements.

  • Difficulty Spike: Parents of students moving from Math 3 Honors into IB Math often complain about an extreme jump in rigor. They report that students feel unprepared for the internal assessments (IAs) and the specific "inquiry-based" testing format used by the IB.

  • Narrow Focus: Some families feel the curriculum is too heavily skewed toward the IB path, leaving students in the "Standard" or "Advanced" tracks with less experienced teachers or fewer tutoring resources.

"Facilitation" and the Lack of Direct Instruction

Like many CMS schools, East Meck uses the Open Up Resources/MVP (Mathematics Vision Project) style of instruction.

  • "Students Teaching Students": The most common complaint is that teachers spend too much time "facilitating" group work and not enough time at the whiteboard explaining concepts. Parents frequently report their children saying, "My teacher doesn't actually teach; they just tell us to work in our groups." [1]

  • Parental Alienation: Because the methods are conceptual and rely on "discovery," parents complain they cannot help their children at home, leading to a reliance on expensive outside tutors.

Reliance on Canvas and Digital Tools

The absence of physical textbooks remains a major grievance in 2026.

  • No Reference Point: Parents find it difficult to track what their children are learning because there is no singular textbook. All materials are housed in CMS Canvas, which parents describe as disorganized or difficult to navigate for review purposes.

  • Quality of Digital Materials: There are complaints that the digital "worksheets" and third-party videos used in place of a text are sometimes inconsistent in quality or contain errors that confuse students.

Staffing and Communication Issues

  • Substitute Reliance: Parents have expressed frustration over "vacant" math positions being filled by long-term substitutes who may not be certified in high-school level mathematics, particularly for Math 1 and Math 2.

  • Grading Delays: A recurring complaint on platforms like Great Schools is the lack of timely grade updates in PowerSchool. Parents often find out a student is failing a math unit weeks after the assessment has passed, making it difficult to intervene.

Large Class Sizes and Tutoring Access

  • Crowded Classrooms: Parents of students in the core "Math 1-2-3" sequence complain that class sizes are too large for teachers to provide the individual support needed for students who struggle with the subject.

  • Tutoring Availability: While East Meck offers "Eagle Time" for extra help, parents report that it is often overcrowded or that their student's specific math teacher is unavailable during those blocks due to other duties.

In 2026, the North Carolina Math 2 (NC Math 2) curriculum continues to be an integrated course that builds upon Math 1, with a primary focus on quadratic functions, geometry, and probability.

 Core Content Areas (2025–2026)

The curriculum is organized into several key conceptual categories:

  • Algebra & Functions: Focuses extensively on quadratic functions, including solving equations with complex solutions and completing the square to rewrite functions in vertex form. It also covers square root functions and inverse variations.

  • Number and Quantity: Extends the real number system to include rational exponents and the introduction of complex numbers (𝑖).

  • Geometry: Emphasizes transformations (translations, rotations, reflections), congruence, similarity of figures, and right triangle trigonometry (sine, cosine, tangent).

  • Statistics and Probability: Covers conditional probability, independence, and the rules of probability for compound events.

Graduation Requirements Update

For the 2025–2026 school year, high school graduation requirements in North Carolina underwent significant legislative changes:

  • Standard Sequence: Students typically complete NC Math 1, NC Math 2, and then either NC Math 3 or a new Computer Science course requirement.

  • Extended Options: Students who struggle with standard Math 1 or 2 can take a two-part sequence. For example, completing Extended Math 3 and 4 satisfies the NC Math 2 graduation credit.

Upcoming Standards Revision

While the current standards are active in 2026, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is in the middle of a major standards review:

  • Current Status: A first draft of the "2026 K-12 Math Standards" was released for public feedback in late 2025.

  • Implementation Timeline: If approved, these revised standards will move to the "Installation" phase in the 2026–2027 school year, with full classroom implementation expected in 2027–2028
