"Is your J.M. Alexander student falling behind or feeling unsupported?"
Low Academic Proficiency: Math and reading test scores at JMA are below district and state averages, with only 27% of students proficient in math and 38% in reading.
Inconsistent Instruction: Parents have reported that some teachers do not explain lessons thoroughly and rely on students to complete work without adequate guidance, sometimes resorting to their phones in class.
Lack of Access for Parents: Homework is often entirely online, yet parents have reported not having the necessary access tools to monitor student progress effectively.
Issues for Advanced Learners: Some parents have expressed concern that advanced students are not adequately challenged and opportunities for accelerated math pathways (like taking Algebra I in 7th grade) are being limited.
The Solution: Tutor Charlotte provides specialized, 1-on-1 online math & ELA tutoring tailored specifically to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the Alexander Graham 6-8 curriculum. Our program offers consistent, expert guidance to help students manage the pressure, fill in knowledge gaps caused by inconsistent instruction, and truly excel in the rigorous environment. Compare our Tutor Charlotte flat price $170.00 a month for 28 to 30 hours of tutoring to our competitor Huntington Learning Center. Their customer complained “They provide a diagnostic and then tell you they will need 80 sessions with your child, at $70-$85 per hour. I contracted for 20 sessions to see how it went before committing to more, then I was told they still need to "learn" my child. Ridiculous! My daughter was bored after 10 sessions, we stopped after 13 and I asked for a credit for the unused hours.”

1. Do you have any homework that I can help you with today?
2. Do you have a quiz, test, or exam this week I can help you prepare for?
3. Do you need a lesson on a particular concept your teacher taught that you did not understand?
4. What did your Language Arts teacher, math teacher, and or science teacher teach you today?
Question: Do I need a desktop computer for my student?
Yes, your student must have access to the internet, speakers on their computer, and I recommend access to a working printer to printout academic work. I recommend a desktop computer over Ipads and other devices.

Complaints about the Math and Language Arts Curriculum at J.M. Alexander Middle School:
Low Proficiency Scores: Only 27% of students are proficient in math and 38% in reading, which is significantly lower than the district and state averages. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can bring the scores up for any student who is willing to learn.
Lack of Challenge: Parents of high-achieving students have expressed frustration that the curriculum fails to challenge advanced learners, leading to students feeling "bored" in class. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte will ensure each student is taught at their own pace and fast learners will be taught accelerated math beyond their grade level.
Rigid Placement: Some parents complain about a "one size fits all" mentality, where students strong in Language Arts but weak in Math are forced into accelerated tracks for both subjects or none at all. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte will focus on a student’s academic weaknesses, and address the academic issues daily.
Teachers (Math and Language Arts)
Instructional Quality: Multiple reviews from late 2024 and 2025 claim some teachers do not actively teach, instead sitting on phones or screaming at students to complete work without prior explanation. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte enjoys teaching and will teach your student all day every day with live instruction.
High Turnover: A recurring complaint is that "good teachers" frequently leave the school, resulting in a lack of consistency. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte have been educating students for 30 years and will continue to do so.
Designated Status: The school is currently designated by North Carolina as a "Recurring Low-Performing School" due to consistent 'D' or 'F' performance grades. But Dr. Kevin L. Powell and Tutor Charlotte can help your student overcome this issue by giving your student a quality supplemental education.
This is a specialized service led by Dr. Kevin L. Powell, focusing on high-level mathematics, physics, and personalized online instruction.
